Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf (good friend of US president George W. Bush) seems ready to resign in the face of impeachment charges, which are likely to begin in the next few days. Impeachment...resignation...amazing what impeachment proceedings can accomplish...anybody think our Congress is paying attention wondering the same thing we're wondering?
The US backed up a stern finger-waggling to Russia by giving in to some of their demands in a new treaty offered by Secretary of Shoes State Condoleezza Rice.

The war in Afghanistan (you know, the other war in the war on terror) has suffered its 500th American casualty.
June was the second deadliest month for the military in Afghanistan since the war began, with 23 American deaths from hostilities, compared with 22 in Iraq. July was less deadly, with 20 deaths, compared with six in Iraq. On July 22, nearly seven years after the conflict began on Oct. 7, 2001, the United States lost its 500th soldier in the Afghanistan war.
...
In 2007, 111 American service members were killed, the highest annual toll so far in the war. So far this year, 91 Americans have died, a rate faster than last year. At least 78 of those deaths have come in combat; by comparison, 50 were killed during the same period last year.
Just a reminder that there are about three times as many US troops in Iraq as there are in Afghanistan...and another reminder that no one in Iraq had anything to do with 9/11.

The Bush Administration once again appeases the terrorists finally listens to reason, admitting that diplomacy might be the best option against Iran. Ahhh, it seems like only yesterday that the thought of talking with them and reaching an agreement was likened to treason.
Roughly two hundred supporters of former Zimbabwe presidential candidate Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party sought refuge outside the US embassy, having fled their homes after being targeted by President Robert Mugabe's supporters and soldiers.
Since last Friday's run-off, the MDC says nine of its supporters have been murdered, hundreds more beaten and forced to leave their homes.
Almost 100 people have been killed and 200,000 left homeless since the MDC won the March vote, the opposition says.

Davis wrote that Pentagon officials notified him that he did "not serve honorably" as top prosecutor and would be denied the medal. Conflicting stories from Iraq: first, the "fight to the end" between Iraqi soldiers and al Sadr's militia has reached its end, as both sides took their guns and went home. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki called the operation a success, even though he says he didn't issue a cease fire. It seems that Iran told al Sadr to tell his troops to stop fighting.
At the same time, though, Maliki is promising to expand these (minimally effective) raids to Baghdad as well.
The U.S. ambassador, meanwhile, said that despite a "boatload" of problems with the Basra operation, he was encouraged that the Shiite-led government was finally confronting extremists regardless of their religious affiliation.
So...a whole bunch of problems with the Basra episode...but it's good, because now Iraqis are killing each other for reasons other than religious differences. Spectacular.
